New iGem Product: Presidium Refractive Index Meter II

iGem Instruments is happy to announce that it will soon be carrying the new Presidium Refractive Index Meter II (PRIM II). This new tool from Presidium Instruments offers users several previously unseen and innovative features which will make the process of diamond and gem testing an easier and more convenient process. Primarily, the PRIM II serves as a large upgrade for users of the older PRIM, as it allows users to connect the tester to a PC and to use it with provided software, allowing for quicker, more accurate identification of gemstones. The PRIM II will be most helpful for individuals testing flat, polished, transparent stones, for the purposes of separating a number of stones accurately and reliably. It will be available in early September.

Tis the Season–to buy diamond and gold testers

The holidays are near.  Tis the Season for buying gifts for those you love.  Diamonds and gold are traditionally the gift of choice.  When buying gifts of high monetary value, it is important to know that you are getting what you pay for.  So, how do you know for sure?  You can start by making your purchases through reputable dealers.  This might not always be possible, especially if you make the majority of your purchases at estate sales.  How can you protect yourself from the unscrupulous and those who just don’t know any better?

Not Legal for Trade Features on Legal for Trade Scales

When you own a business buying gold, you need a legal for trade scale.  These scales must meet the NTEP requirements and need to be certified by your local weights and measures authority.  One piece of information you need to know is that although these scales are legal for trade, the counting feature is never legal for trade on any scale by any manufacturer.  This is because there is no way to guarantee the individual weights of the items being counted.  The sticker on the front of legal for trade scales says that the counting feature is not legal for trade.  People often make the mistake of thinking that this means the SCALE is not legal for trade when in fact it is.

How to Test for Gold Plating Using an Electronic Gold Tester

Please note that you usually won’t find these instructions in the maual included with your gold tester at the time of purchase.  This is for your information.

The process of testing for gold plating is not difficult when using an electronic gold tester.   When using a tester that requires dipping the gold being tested into a well of liquid, there is the possibility that the tester may be able to test through the thin layer of plating.  For this and most other cases, there is an easy way to check.

With electronic gold testers, the testing procedure includes cleaning the gold with an eraser.

Rubies and Sapphires: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Rubies and sapphires are names for the same stone, Corundum.  This is one of the reasons why a gem tester cannot tell the difference between the two.  The only difference is the color.  Rubies are red.  Sapphires are any other color that is not red.  These stones have a hardness on the Mohs Scale of 9, which makes them almost as hard as diamonds and moissanite.  In fact, some diamond/moissanite testers also test for white sapphire due to the confusion.

Special Features of the Gemoro Ultratester II Diamond/Moissanite Tester

Many of you have been asking for recommendations on a good diamond/moissanite tester.  The Gemoro Ultratester II is one of the best.  It has many features that other testers don’t.  For example, this is the only diamond/moissanite tester that also tests for white sapphire.  The LED light assists you with proper placement of the tip on the stone you are testing.  The fully-retractable tip also lets you know when you’ve applied enough pressure, which is often difficult to tell on models that do not have this feature.  There is also a different colored light for each type of stone.  For example, when you have moissanite, there is a blue light, for diamond, a green light, etc.  There is no second guessing.
